Digital Pathology AI Scientist

NPIC AI Research Team

Andrew Broad

Andrew joined NPIC in January 2024 as a Digital Pathology AI Scientist, developing software to support NPIC’s research activities, and exploring ways to incorporate Artificial Intelligence algorithms into the world of Digital Pathology.

Andrew studied for his PhD with Leeds University’s Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Diagnosis and Care. The thesis title is: Can Attention-Inspired Artificial Intelligence Provide a Diagnostic Understanding of Colorectal Cancer Imaging Data? This work uses novel AI methods based on human visual attention, to classify tissue patch images, visualise tissue types in a whole-slide image, and to track down regions of cancerous tissue.

In his earlier career, Andrew was an engineer with BBC North, later retraining as a software developer and working mainly on healthcare systems since 2008. These include the NHS Choices website and Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ electronic health record, PPM+
