National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC), at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) are leading the development of a National Secure Data Environment (SDE) for digital pathology. The NPIC data platform will enable secure access for research users, facilitate the curation of large-scale research datasets and support clinical trials.
NPIC, together with the NHS England Data for Research and Development programme will help accelerate national research in AI model development and evaluation with exemplar projects linked with regional SDEs.
“NPIC is uniquely positioned to deliver world leading data for research into AI-powered cancer diagnostics. With this funding we are excited to build our research platform and grow the team to help evaluate new technologies to benefit patients in the NHS.”
Dr Alex Wright, Head of Research Infrastructure, NPIC
The NPIC SDE platform will scale up NPIC’s existing research infrastructure to upgrade its capability and resilience, link to additional sites, and demonstrate the ability to create research cohorts of digital pathology images in collaboration with the regional SDEs.
NPIC SDE Project Summary
- NPIC will receive investment from the government to create a national Digital Pathology research platform.
- The funding will allow NPIC to develop a proof-of-concept national platform for digital pathology research data
- The platform will create and share digital pathology image datasets with NHSE sub-national SDEs
