NPIC Digital Pathology Deployment Shortlisted for the 2024 HSJ Awards: Setting the Standard for Healthcare Excellence

LEEDS, West Yorkshire

NPIC is delighted to announce that their Digital Pathology Deployment team has been shortlisted for the Modernising Diagnostics Award at the HSJ Awards, recognising an outstanding contribution to healthcare and securing a place at the prestigious awards ceremony later this year.

1350+ entries have been received for this year’s Awards, with 234 projects and individuals reaching the final shortlist. The high volume and exceptional quality of applications showcases the impressive levels of innovation and care continually being developed within the UK’s healthcare networks.

Following the thorough judging process, NPIC was shortlisted, ahead of the official awards ceremony to be held later this year (21st November), with its Digital Pathology Deployment standing out as a real ‘success story’ worthy of a prized place on the panel’s shortlist.

Diagnostic cellular pathology departments are experiencing unprecedented economic and service pressures, and digital pathology is part of the solution to these challenges. Digital Pathology (also known as whole slide imaging) is a step-change technology that has potential to revolutionise the way in which histopathology services are delivered, offering a flexible platform for safety, quality, and efficiency improvements, whilst future-proofing an increasingly pressured diagnostic specialty. Furthermore, a digital pathology system provides a platform for the development of artificial intelligence-based image analysis, further enhancing pathology diagnosis with greater diagnostic reproducibility, standardisation, and efficiency in future.

NPIC’s vision is to build a national digital pathology platform capable of holding a digital pathology image for every cancer patient in the NHS, to support both clinical care and research and innovation. The NPIC Programme embarked on an ambitious journey to design and build a national digital pathology platform to support patient diagnosis across England. NPIC have successfully designed and built a digital pathology platform that has the potential to be scaled up to support all pathology services across England. NPIC have now successfully supported the entire WYAAT pathology network to go 100% digital slide scanning which provides the vehicle for those Trusts to progress to 100% digital reporting within pathology, fully digitising 6 NHS Trusts and linking over 100 pathologists.

In parallel to supporting this successful implementation across WYAAT, NPIC are supporting a further 12 NHS Trusts to reach digital maturity within pathology which will go live within 2024 and 2025, including progressing two national networks to support Paediatrics pathology and Bone & Soft Tissue, There are also another three pathology networks showing interest to join the national network and benefit from this unique solution that offers the ability to support patient care regardless of geographical location.

“We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Modernising Diagnostics Award at the HSJ Awards 2024. It will be a huge boost for our dedicated and hardworking team, especially in a year when the competition was so tough with an unprecedented volume of entries from so many other equally deserving Trusts and individuals.

Whatever the result ‘on the night’, we already feel like winners for getting this far and are so proud to have the opportunity to share our success with colleagues from across the entire sector, as well as showcasing everything we’ve learnt through implementing our project.”

Bash Hussain, NPIC Director

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, adds; “It always gives me great pleasure to congratulate our finalists at this stage of the judging process and this year is no exception as we acknowledge NPIC for being shortlisted in the category of Modernising Diagnostics Award.

“However, it’s always important to remember that the HSJ Awards are not just a celebration of success stories but also a platform to shape the future of the NHS.

“We can’t wait to welcome our finalists to the awards ceremony in November and to recognise and applaud such impressive achievements across the sector. Huge thanks also go to our headline partner, Vodafone Business, who share our mission of driving the standard of healthcare excellence and creating better patient experiences.”

The selected winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at Evolution London on 21st November 2024.

The event will not only reflect the HSJ Awards’ enduring ethos of “sharing best practice, improving patient outcomes and innovating drivers of better service” but will also serve as a timely and well-deserved thank you to the sector.
